Excel 2 Fret Board Mastery

It’s not just about your sound, it’s about your emotion. The greatest players on this planet will tell you if there’s no emotion then it’s not as real as it can get. Get to know your fret board, upside down inside out, you get the idea. Take time to learn where every “A” is all over the fretboard. Every “B”, “C”,, so on and so forth. Learning every note can be fun if you make little games out of it. These are just examples. These are not exactly what I do. I’m just giving you ideas, things to picture in your head. Ok take any 3 or 4 notes that sound good to you. So now you memorize those notes you choose and play them in every position up and down the neck. Then switch up the order all over and up and down the neck. Then play 2 of those notes in one position and the other 2 notes you didn’t play in another position. Now your really moving your fret hand all over. And your only using 3 or 4 notes. If you want to play games like this really OUT OF THE BOX, then take those 3 or 4 notes you were using and memorize all the notes all the around the notes you already played. Some won’t sound good with the first set of notes you choose, but some will. This will teach you other notes around the ones you’re playing games with. It’s just an example, but I tested this out first and it does work. A more basic way to understand this in your head is pick one note. Only 1. Now learn that one note all over. Now the out of the box way, play that ONE note and learn and memorize the notes immediately to the left, the right, the top and the bottom of that one note. Of course if your on your upper bass strings then there might not be a note straight above that note, but you get the idea. Your fretboard will only respond to the commands your fingers give it. So the best way to be in control of those sounds is know your fretboard. It’s not just about speed or slow playing or whatever style you mostly play it’s about EMOTION and FUN.
